What you will learn:

Participants will acquire a fundamental understanding of the nature and types of invested assets used by life insurance companies. Invested assets are the dominant asset for Statutory purposes, as a result, this course will review the Statutory Annual investment schedules, exhibits and worksheets. The seminar materials also explore the presentation and disclosure of invested assets in the GAAP balance sheet and financial statement footnotes. The course utilizes class exercises to enhance participants' understanding of key elements of the accounting and reporting for invested assets.

  • Review of Statutory investments and summary investment schedules
  • Overview of the Statutory nonadmitted asset concept and its applicability to invested assets
  • Interest Maintenance Reserve (IMR) and Asset Valuation Reserve (AVR) [Statutory only]
  • Investment income
  • Realized and unrealized capital gains (losses)
  • Accounting for invested asset impairments
  • Introduction to derivatives
  • Special investment accounting rules
  • Statutory and GAAP investment disclosures

Accountants, auditors, investment specialist, financial managers and others working with or needing a better understanding of Statutory and/or GAAP accounting and financial reporting for invested assets held by life insurance companies.
